‘Sé mo Laoch

We were delighted to have completed the Audio Mix on Series 9 of TG4’s music documentary series ‘Sé mo Laoch.

Sé Mo Laoch profiles some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians and singers. Series 9 hears from some of the most influential Irish musicians of all time, Matt Molloy, Maighréad & Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Alec Finn, Arty McGlynn, Sarah Ghriallais, Frankie Gavin & Alec Finn.


Frankie Gavin Frankie Gavin
Frankie Gavin is one of the best known exponents of traditional Irish music anywhere in the world. In the first of a new series of 6 hour long programmes, this revealing documentary tells the story of Frankie Gavin, a founder of the great De Dannan and an ambassador for Irish music around the world. From his early idyllic days in rural Galway to more challenging times in a city school and on to the great stages of the world Frankie Gavin shares his story, his life and of course, his music on both fiddle and flute. With Mary Bergin, Máirtín O’Connor, Dolores Keane, Alec Finn and Joe Burke.


Matt Molloy Matt Molloy
Matt Molloy is considered one of the most influential traditional Irish musicians of all time having, according to many, brought flute playing to a completely different level (and they aren’t just referring to the fact that an astronaut brought his flute to a space station!). Since giving up the day job with Aer Lingus at a young age, Matt has toured the world displaying an unmatched mastery and understanding of the instrument and the music, enthralling audiences worldwide while remaining deep within the tradition. On this week’s ‘Sé mo Laoch he shares with us his music and his story.


Maighréad agus Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill Maighréad agus Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill
Maighread and Tríona Ní Domhnaill from Co. Meath are two singers blessed with a repertoire and tradition from Rannafast in Donegal and two very distinctive voices. Creating harmonies with an understanding that only siblings have & delivery that comes from the heart, the sisters have brought their heritage to the world stage with songs handed down from previous generations, songs that would otherwise have been lost. From Skara Brae to the Bothy Band, solo careers & sessions, Maighread & Tríona have created a wealth of music that enriches the soul. With Paddy Glackin, Dónal Lunny, Moya Brennan.


Arty McGlynn Arty McGlynn
This programme tells us about the life and career of Arty McGlynn from Tyrone. From his early years on the show band scene to his time as Van Morrison’s musical director and his work with Paul Brady, Patrick Street and The Clancy Brothers, Arty has collaborated with many of the greats across numerous musical genres. His unique and original style of guitar accompaniment has had a huge influence on the world of traditional music.


Alec Finn
This epsiode tells the story of the bohemian, artistic and unique accompanist Alec Finn. He is a trained artist and a Yorkshire man with a background in the blues came to Ireland in the 60’s and he is also the co-founder of De Danann. He embraced traditional Irish music and created sounds and rhythms that had never been heard before. He made Ireland his home and left an indelible mark on the tradition with his extraordinary and original talent. With Eleanor Shanley, Mary Bergin, Seán Ryan and Frankie Gavin.


Sarah Ghríallais
The Griallais family from Muiceanach idir Dhá Sháile in Conamara have, between them, won Corn Uí Riada, the pinnacle of sean-nós singing, no less than eight times. Sarah Ghríallais, the subject of this documentary, is one of them, a master of the tradition widely known for her respect for the tradition and her generosity in passing it on, for the musicality of her voice and clarity of her style. Guests on the programme include Mícheál Ó Conghaile, Lillis Ó Laoire, Meaití Jó Shéamuis, Síle Denvir and Iarla Ó Lionáird.
