Programme 1: Clann Mhic Ruairí
The Mac Ruairí family were raised on the Gaelic songs and stories of Rann na Feirste, in the Donegal Gaeltacht, passed on from their parents, grandparents and generations before them. As they entered adulthood they soon realised the value of their cultural upbringing and they formally founded the group Clann Mhic Ruairí. First and foremost they are passionate about preserving and promoting the song tradition of Rann na Feirste and passing this tradition on to the next generation.
Programme 2: The Gavin Family
This episode explores the Gavin family, Frankie, Séan and Noreen who grew up surrounded by music in Corrandulla, Galway, where their father, J.J. ran a small thatched pub. As children, they remember spending nights listening from the top of the stairs listening to notable visiting musicians. The young Gavin’s played for President John F. Kennedy during his visit to Galway and Frankie, a fiddle prodigy, is recognized for his part in co-founding the legendary Irish folk group, De Dannan.
Programme 3: The Henry Girls
The Mc Loughlin Sisters, AKA ‘The Henry Girls’, come from Malin, Co Donegal. They were brought up by music loving parents who introduced them to an eclectic array of sounds from The Bothy Band to The Beatles. Their mother ran a local choir and their dad loved traditional and country music. He loved a party and regularly had musicians back at the family home. Since going professional in 2010 they have become one of Ireland’s most talked about folk/roots acts.
Programme 4: Na MacConnells – Watch it on the TG4 Player
The MacConnell brothers were born and reared in Ballinaleck, Co. Fermanagh and grew up in a very musical household. They were encouraged by their parents from an early age to pursue their love of music. Their father Sandy was a renowned musician in the 50’s.
Programme 5: Muintir Moynihan – Watch it on the TG4 Player
The Moynihan Family is well known on the Irish and international musical scene and their range of musical styles encompass classical, traditional and contemporary music. They have performed in prestigious venues around the world and have recorded extensively, both individually and collaboratively across the musical genres. Their parents had a huge interest in music. He was a primary school teacher, like their mum, and was also involved in the music scene in Cork, where he played the accordion and taught his kids tin whistle in the car while going to school.
